Abstract

Market efficiency cannot be adequately assessed through prices or producer profitability alone because economic transactions generate benefits that may be distributed unequally among market participants. This study examines consumer surplus and producer surplus as complementary indicators of market efficiency, identifies the factors influencing their magnitude and distribution, and evaluates their limitations in representing social welfare. A qualitative narrative literature review was conducted using secondary academic sources, including scholarly books and peer-reviewed journal articles. The materials were examined through descriptive-analytical procedures involving conceptual interpretation, thematic comparison, and critical synthesis. The analysis establishes that consumer surplus reflects gains relative to willingness to pay, while producer surplus represents returns above relevant supply opportunity costs. Their combination provides a measure of aggregate gains from exchange under specified market assumptions. Price adjustments, production costs, competitive structures, ownership arrangements, and government interventions influence surplus formation and distribution. However, aggregate surplus does not necessarily capture consumer heterogeneity, distributive inequalities, externalities, public expenditure, or resource constraints. The study develops a three-dimensional evaluative framework integrating surplus generation, benefit distribution, and broader welfare limitations. Consumer and producer surplus are consequently useful but incomplete indicators of allocative efficiency, requiring careful interpretation alongside relevant social and economic considerations.
